From the FDA website:

December 23, 2021, Woody’s Pet Food Deli of Minneapolis, MN is recalling Raw Cornish Hen pet food “With Supplements” sticker due to a Salmonella health risk.

The product was distributed in the company’s retail stores in Minneapolis, Saint Paul, and Woodbury, Minnesota.

Salmonella can affect animals eating the product and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products.

Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.

Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

The recalled products and label are listed below:

Two (2) 5lb tubs were sold in the company’s St Paul store. Twelve (12) 15oz containers were distributed through its 3 Twin Cities, MN retail stores.

The company continues their investigation as to the source of the problem and will resume production when the problem is resolved. The recall is a result of FDA sampling due to a consumer complaint on another product, which testing revealed a sample of this product contains Salmonella.

Consumers who have these products should discontinue use and may return the unused portion to the place of purchase for a full refund. If you have recalled product in your home, clean refrigerators/freezers where the product was stored and clean and disinfect all bowls, utensils, food prep surfaces, pet bedding, toys, floors, and any other surfaces that the food or pet may have had contact with. Because animals can shed the bacteria in the feces when they have bowel movements, it’s particularly important to clean up the animal’s feces in yards or parks where people or other animals may become exposed, in addition to cleaning items in the home. Consumers should thoroughly wash their hands after handling the affected product or cleaning up potentially contaminated items and surfaces.

Consumers with questions may contact our stores Tuesday through Saturday noon to 6 PM CST at 612-208-0335 (Minneapolis), 651-493-7269 (St Paul), and 651-340-8678 (Woodbury).

Our stores are closed from December 25, 2021 to January 3, 2022 and we are not able to answer phone calls during that time. Please contact us by email at info@woodyspetdeli.com.

From the FDA website:

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) is notifying consumers of a recall of raw turkey pet food from Woody’s Pet Food Deli due to Salmonellacontamination. This recall is being issued after product samples collected by the MDA tested positive for Salmonella. Sampling was begun after the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) identified a human case of Salmonella linked to the pet food.

The recalled product was sold in 5-pound plastic containers labeled “Woody’s Pet Food Deli Raw Free Range Turkey” and can be identified by the white date sticker on the cover of the pet food container. The product was sold at Woody’s Pet Food Deli locations in Minneapolis, St. Paul and Woodbury. The following three lots of product are being recalled:

  • Use by date: 01/10/20
  • Use by date: 01/12/20
  • Use by date: 01/15/20

No other lots of Woody’s Pet Food Deli products are affected by the recall. If you have recalled product in your home, you should throw it out or return it to a Woody’s Pet Food Deli for a full refund. Do not feed the contaminated product to pets. Consumers with questions can contact the Woody’s Pet Food Deli stores directly at the following phone numbers:

  • Minneapolis: 612-208-0335
  • St. Paul: 651-493-7269
  • Woodbury: 651-340-8678

Or by email at info@woodyspetdeli.com.

The person with Salmonella infection was identified as part of an ongoing, multistate investigation of Salmonella Reading infections coordinated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). MDH’s interview of the person revealed that Woody’s Pet Deli raw ground turkey pet food was regularly fed to a pet in the household. The pet also tested positive for Salmonella, but not the outbreak strain. In February 2018, MDA and MDH investigated two other cases of Salmonella Reading that matched the outbreak strain and were linked to raw ground turkey pet food from a different manufacturer.

Symptoms of Salmonella infection include diarrhea, abdominal pain and fever. Symptoms usually begin within 12 to 96 hours after exposure, but they can begin up to two weeks after exposure. Infections usually resolve in five to seven days, but about 28 percent of laboratory-confirmed cases require hospitalization. If you’ve handled these products or had contact with an animal that has eaten these products, become ill and are concerned about your health, please consult your health care provider for more information.

After eating or coming into contact with Salmonella-containing food, pets can spread the bacteria from their mouths, saliva, fur and feces, even if they’re not showing signs of illness, to humans and other animals in the household. Pet dishes, floors and the environment around the feeding station should be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. Pets with a Salmonella infection may be lethargic and have decreased appetite, diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Pets exposed to contaminated food can also be infected without showing symptoms. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, contact your veterinarian. Salmonella bacteria can survive for weeks in the household environment, which can serve as a continuing source of infection.

CDC does not recommend feeding a raw meat diet to pets because it can make animals and people sick. If you choose to use pet food containing raw meat, follow CDC’s tips for healthy feeding.
