This is the latest recall announced by the FDA.  If you have the Safe Pet Treats app, the app will alert you of the recall if you scan the barcode found on the back of these two products

The following can be found on the FDA’s website

Blue Ridge Beef is voluntarily recalling two (2) of its frozen products due to their potential to be contaminated with Salmonella and/or Listeria monocytogenes. Salmonella and Listeria can affect animals eating the product. There is a risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surface exposed to these products.

Healthy people infected with Salmonella and/or Listeria monocytogenes should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever.

The affected products are sold in 2 lb chubs and can be identified with the following manufacturing codes:

Lot #mfd ga8516
Beef for dogs
UPC code 854298001009
Lot #mfd ga81216
Kitten grind
UPC code 854298001016

The affected products were distributed to retail stores in the following states:

  • NC
  • SC
  • GA
  • FL
  • AZ
  • TX

About Salmonella and Listeria

Salmonella and Listeria can affect animals eating the product and there is a risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surface exposed to these products.

Healthy people infected with Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever.

Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare provider. Consumers should also follow the simple handling tips on the package.

What caused the Recall

This recall was initiated after the FDA received two complaints associated with these products, including one complaint of two kitten illnesses and one complaint of a puppy death. Subsequent testing by the FDA of a 2 lb chub of beef for dogs and kitten grind collected at a veterinary office revealed the presence of Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes. There is no direct evidence linking these unfortunate instances to contaminated product.

This recall is being made with the knowledge of the US Food and Drug Administration.

What to do

Consumers who have purchased the above lots of beef for dogs or kitten grind are urged to stop feeding them and return products to the place of purchase for a full refund. Or dispose of them immediately. Those with questions can email the company at blueridgebeefga@yahoo.com.

It has been a while since we’ve had a recall (knock on wood), but today we found out about the Addiction brand dog food recall announced recently. This recall has been added to the Safe Pet Treats app so you’ll be notified should you come across these products at the pet store the next time you scan the barcode.

Addiction Foods, a Kent-based pet-food company, says it is recalling 355 cases of its canned dog foods after testing showed elevated levels of Vitamin A and a slight variance in calcium / phosphorous ratios.

The company, whose food is manufactured at its plant in New Zealand, says the cans were shipped to distributors and online retailers between Feb. 11 and March 19 and include:

Addiction New Zealand Brushtail and Vegetables Canned Dog Food Entrée
size 13.8oz/390g
UPC code 8 885004 070028
lot number 8940:02Dec2018

Exposure to excessive Vitamin A levels for an extended period of time may cause health problems in young, growing animals. If dogs were fed these products exclusively for 60 days, owners could notice a decrease in appetite.

Consumers are asked to discontinue use of the product, and unused cans may be returned to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers may contact the company at 425-251-0330 or via email at info@addictionfoods.com.

Fromm Family Foods of Mequon, Wisconsin, has announced it is voluntarily recalling three of its canned dog foods because they may contain elevated levels of vitamin D. The Safe Pet Treats app will automatically identify these three products should you scan them at the store.

The following is from the Fromm Family Pet Foods:

Fromm Family Foods is recalling all lots of the following three canned product skus:

  • 12 oz. Gold Chicken Pate Dog can case code#11893, individual can upc : 72705 11892
  • 12 oz. Gold Chicken & Duck can case code #11895, individual can upc: 72705 11894
  • 12 oz. Gold Salmon & Chicken Pate can case code #11891, individual can upc: 72705 11890

Fromm Dog Food Recall

Fromm has discovered through its own analysis that the above referenced canned dog foods do not contain recommended levels of vitamins and minerals. These products may contain elevated levels of Vitamin D.

This recall is being implemented in an abundance of caution as symptoms should only be noted in situations where dogs have eaten the affected products as their only meal for an extended period of time, which could lead to depression of appetite. While there have been no reports of any health problems, Fromm is recommending the affected products not be fed.

The affected products were shipped by Fromm to distributor warehouses from December 2015 through February 2016.

Immediately examine your inventory and quarantine product subject to recall. Please identify your customers and notify them at once of this product recall. Your notification to your customers may include a copy of this recall notification letter. This recall should be carried out to the retail level.

Retailers should return the products to distributors for return to Fromm Family Foods.

See the enclosed product labels for ease in identifying the product at retail and user levels.

There are no other Fromm products affected by this recall.

Your assistance is appreciated. If you have questions, contact Fromm Family Foods at 800-325-6331.

This recall is being made with the knowledge of the FDA.
