This Darwin’s alert is a caution from the FDA only. No official recall has been issued.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is cautioning pet owners not to feed their pets certain lots of Darwin’s Natural Pet Products raw cat food after samples from these lots tested positive for Salmonella. These foods have been associated with cases of illness in three kittens in a single household.

  • Darwin’s Natural Pet Products Natural Selections Antibiotic & Grain Free Chicken Recipe for Cats, Lot 9116, manufactured on May 2, 2022.
  • Darwin’s Natural Pet Products Natural Selections Antibiotic & Grain Free Turkey Recipe for Cats, Lot 9121, manufactured on May 4, 2022.

If this caution is updated to a recall, we will at that time add it to the Safe Pet Treats app.  Available on iTunes and Google Play.

From the FDA website:

  • The U.S.
  • The products are sold in white and clear plastic packages with blue and green labeling. Each pack weighs two pounds and consists of four separate units. The lot codes are on the front lower left unit of the package.
  • If you have these lots of Darwin’s Natural Pet Food, or you can’t be sure of the lot code of the products you have, throw them away. Do not feed them to your pets.
  • The FDA is issuing this alert because these lots of Darwin’s Natural Pet Products cat food represent a serious threat to human and animal health.
  • Salmonella can affect both human and animal health. People with symptoms of Salmonella infection should consult their health care providers. Consult a veterinarian if your pet has symptoms of Salmonella infection.

What is the problem?

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is cautioning pet owners not to feed their pets two lots of Darwin’s Natural Pet Food because products from these lots tested positive for Salmonella

These products are Darwin’s Natural Pet Products Natural Selections Antibiotic & Grain Free Chicken Recipe for Cats, Lot 9116, manufactured on May 2, 2022; and Darwin’s Natural Pet Products Natural Selections Antibiotic & Grain Free Turkey Recipe for Cats, Lot 9121, manufactured on May 4, 2022. These products are manufactured by Arrow Reliance Inc., doing business as Darwin’s Natural Pet Products, and are sold online direct to consumers.

The FDA collected and analyzed unopened samples of products from these two lots after receiving a report of illness in three kittens in a single household that had consumed the food and developed diarrhea. A stool sample from one of the kittens tested positive for Salmonella. A fourth kitten did not eat the food and did not become sick.

Whole genome sequencing of the Salmonella in the two products revealed that the turkey product contained Salmonella Typhimurium, while the chicken product contained Salmonella Typhimurium and Kentucky.

Why is the FDA issuing this alert?

The FDA is issuing this alert because these two lots of Darwin’s Natural Pet Products cat food represent a serious threat to human and animal health. Because these products are sold and stored frozen, the FDA is concerned that people may still have them in their possession and feed them to their pets.

The FDA recommended that Arrow Reliance Inc. voluntarily recall these products and notify the public, but the company has not done so.

What do I need to do?

If you have either of the two Darwin’s Natural Pet Products Natural Selections Cat Foods listed above, stop feeding it to your pets and throw it away in a secure container where other animals, including wildlife, cannot access it.

Consumers who have had this product in their homes should clean refrigerators/freezers where the product was stored and clean and disinfect all bowls, utensils, food prep surfaces, pet bedding, litter boxes, toys, floors, and any other surfaces that the food or pet may have had contact with. Clean up the pet’s feces in places where people or other animals may become exposed. Consumers should thoroughly wash their hands after handling the product or cleaning up potentially contaminated items and surfaces.

What is Salmonella and what are the symptoms of Salmonella infection?

Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause illness and death in humans and animals, especially those who are very young, very old, or have weak immune systems. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), people infected with Salmonella can develop diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps. Most people recover without treatment, but in some people, the diarrhea may be so severe that they need to be hospitalized. In these patients, the Salmonella infection may spread from the intestines to the blood stream and then to other body sites unless the person is treated promptly with antibiotics. Consult your health care provider if you have symptoms of Salmonella infection.

Pets do not always display symptoms when infected with Salmonella, but signs can include vomiting, diarrhea (which may be bloody), fever, loss of appetite and/or decreased activity level. If your pet has these symptoms, consult a veterinarian promptly. You should also be aware that infected pets can shed the bacteria in their feces without showing signs of being sick.

Why is the FDA concerned about Salmonella in pet food?

Pet foods contaminated with Salmonella are of particular public health importance because they can affect both human and animal health. Pets can get sick from Salmonella and may also be carriers of the bacteria and pass it on to their human companions without appearing to be ill. The FDA is aware of cases in which humans and/or animals have gotten sick from exposure to Salmonella-contaminated pet foods (Salmonella-human casesExternal Link DisclaimerSalmonella-kittenSalmonella-kitten, dogExternal Link Disclaimer).

Once Salmonella gets established in the pet’s gastrointestinal tract, the animal can shed the bacteria when it has a bowel movement, and the contamination can continue to spread. Because animals can shed the bacteria when they have bowel movements, it’s particularly important to clean up the animal’s feces in yards or parks where people or other animals may become exposed, in addition to cleaning items in the home.

The Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act requires that all animal foods, like human foods, be safe to eat, produced under sanitary conditions, contain no harmful substances, and be truthfully labeled. Refrigeration or freezing does not kill Salmonella. Pet owners who choose to feed raw pet food should be aware of the risks associated with these products.

How can I report a pet illness?

People who think their pets have become ill after consuming contaminated pet food should first contact their veterinarians. Veterinarians who wish to have pets tested for Salmonella may do so through the Veterinary Laboratory Investigation and Response Network (Vet-LIRN Network) if the pet is from a household with a person infected with Salmonella

The FDA encourages consumers to report complaints about pet food products electronically through the Safety Reporting Portal or by calling their state’s FDA Consumer Complaint Coordinators.

Family Dollar, Inc. is initiating a voluntary retail level product recall of certain products regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that were stored and shipped to 404 stores from Family Dollar Distribution Center 202 in West Memphis, Arkansas from January 1, 2021 through the present due to the presence of rodents and rodent activity at Family Dollar Distribution Center 202.

There are numerous hazards associated with rodents including the potential presence of Salmonella. Use or consumption of affected products may present risk of illness due to the potential presence of Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in infants, young children, frail or elderly people, pregnant persons, persons with pre- existent pathology (e.g., patients with cancer undergoing chemotherapy treatments, organ transplant recipient, etc.) and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

To date, Family Dollar is not aware of any consumer complaints or reports of illness related to this recall.

Products covered by this retail level recall include all: (i) drugs; (ii) medical devices; (iii) cosmetics; (iv) dietary supplements; and (v) human and animal (pet) food products. The recall does not apply to products shipped directly to the stores by the distributor or manufacturer, such as all frozen and refrigerated items. The 404 stores to which this recall applies are listed on the attached schedule. The recall does not apply to other store locations.

Family Dollar is notifying its affected stores by letter asking them to check their stock immediately and to quarantine and discontinue the sale of any affected product. Customers that may have bought affected product may return such product to the Family Dollar store where they were purchased without receipt.

The Nom Nom cat food recall is a voluntary recall being done by the company because of a recall issued by their supplier, Tyson Foods Inc. Certain chicken products produced by Tyson are potentially contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

This recall has been added to the Safe Pet Treats app.  Available on iTunes and Google Play.

The following recall notice was sent by Nom Nom to customers on July 8, 2021:

We’re writing to advise you that Nom Nom is voluntarily recalling certain lots of Chicken Cuisine cat food produced by Nom Nom between March 8, 2021 and May 17, 2021 because of a recall issued by our supplier, Tyson Foods Inc. Certain chicken products produced by Tyson are potentially contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The recall primarily affects chicken sold for human consumption at various retailers and food service establishments, and we encourage you to review the full list here to ensure you did not purchase any other affected products.

Only certain lots are at risk of being contaminated: Lots 18700, 18714, 18728, 18742, 18756, and 18770. The lot number is found at the bottom of the bag label (see below). If you have one of the affected lots, please stop feeding it to your pet immediately, take a photo, and email us.
While we wish we were writing under better circumstances, we want to assure and then reassure you that we are writing from a place of transparency, a desire to provide you as much information as possible, and a continued commitment to the health of your cat.

Reason for the Voluntary Recall

We are issuing a voluntary recall after consultation with the FDA following notice from one of our suppliers, Tyson. According to Tyson and the USDA, some of the chicken used in our Chicken Cuisine for Cats is subject to a broad recall for potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. Our records show you may have Chicken Cuisine for Cats which may contain the impacted lots that were made with Tyson ingredients. You can find those lot numbers in the table below. The recall is being initiated as a precautionary measure and in keeping with our commitment to food safety.

  • If you have already fed the impacted food and there is none in your possession, there is no ongoing risk to you or your cat under this recall.
  • No other products or lots of dog or cat foods produced by Nom Nom are affected by this recall.

Risk to Health

At this time, Nom Nom has had no reports of cats or cat parents being affected by Listeria monocytogenes after feeding our product.

In a continued effort to provide you with the most helpful information possible, we want to share a little more about Listeria monocytogenes. It is a common bacteria found in the environment that can grow under refrigerated conditions. However, symptoms in cats are rare after exposure; according to the FDA fact sheet, “L. monocytogenes rarely cause disease in dogs and cats and, even when infected, pets usually have only mild gastrointestinal signs, such as diarrhea and vomiting. However, more serious signs are possible, such as fever, muscle pain, breathing problems, pregnancy loss, and even death.” Again, we have had no reports at this time of Listeria monocytogenes infection in any cat that was fed our Chicken Cuisine for Cats.

Listeria monocytogenes can affect animals eating contaminated products and there is a potential risk to humans handling contaminated pet products. Exposure to L. monocytogenes can cause listeriosis in humans, a serious infection that primarily affects older adults, persons with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women and their newborns.

Actions to be Taken by You, Our Customer

If you should find any food from the affected lots below, please stop feeding the affected product immediately and destroy the food by placing it into a secure trash can for the earliest disposal. In an effort to track affected food, please kindly contact us by responding to this email with a photo of the food bag with lot code, including approximately how many affected meal bags you still have on hand, or call us at 415-991-0669.

Some people infected with E. coli O157 do not get sick at all, though they can still spread the infection to others. Common symptoms observed after infection include nausea, vomiting, headache, mild fever, severe stomach cramps, and watery or bloody diarrhea. Most symptoms end within five to ten days. Pregnant women, those with weakened immune systems, young children and older adults are most at risk for developing serious complications and might need hospitalization.

There is no real treatment for E. coli infections, other than monitoring the illness, providing comfort, and preventing dehydration. People should contact their health care provider if symptoms persist or worsen with time.
